This time of year is always a bit confusing because the weather is fluctuating so much. It just means you need to let go a bit more and enjoy the ride. In all the classes that I teach this month, we are going to do a bit of heat generating and strengthening followed by some stretching and relaxation. Just what you need to get rid of a lingering chill, but also gives us the opportunity to tap into that warmer place where the weather is heading.
Why is it so important to take advantage of warmer weather in this way? Well, for one thing, since we are starting from a warmer place it takes less movement to get to a place where it is safe to stretch. The quicker we can stretch safely, the more we can sink in and maybe make some progress with flexibility if that is something you are looking to do. More warmth generally means more energy. Until we get into the depths of summer when the body wants to conserve energy and water, we are in that short window of the year where generating heat is easy and comfortable. Why not take advantage?
So what about rest during this transition? Well, rest is always important. It just may start to look a little different. Maybe sitting outside or taking a casual stroll may be enough. Rest can really mean so many different things. Mental rest, physical rest, emotional rest... All are super important, but you may need one more than another especially if you tend to be more active as the weather gets warmer. Check in with your body and mind. What type of rest are you craving? How can you achieve that rest? Listen and find the kind of rest that will serve you the most. Your body and mind will thank you.
